Osteopaths are often associated with treating back pain. However osteopaths can treat joint and muscle strains in any part of the body including the hips, legs, knees, ankles, feet, wrist, elbows, shoulders, arms and ribs, for example tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, joggers knee and some sports minor sports injuries.
The osteopath will want to know about your symptoms and when the symptoms occur in relation to the joint, the joint position and movements. When related to a specific sport the osteopath will be interested in your sport, when the injury occured in sport and sometimes the osteopath will need to observe you whilst you perform your sport. This further allows the osteopath to identify more exactly and specifically to the individual what will be required to best help you. Please ask or contact us about your joint and sports injury problems.
Firstly, this condition has little to do with the shoulder being cold or not! The correct name is Adhesive Capsulitis; adhesive meaning sticky or very tight and Capsulitis meaning inflammation of the joint membrane surrounding the joint, which keeps the joint fluid in and around the joint.
Frozen shoulder is often seen in people over 40-45 years of age and in women more than men. Typically the condition has three six month phases, lasting eighteen months to two years. However this pattern can vary greatly.
The first phase is the inflammatory phase, which is very irritable and painful. The second phase is restrictive, loss of normal movement and can be very painful when trying to move the shoulder. The last phase is the reparative or healing phase. Ice and anti-inflammatory gel can help as the shoulder joint is relatively superficial and with appropriate direct exercises working a little into the pain to get it moving.
The osteopathic treatment for frozen shoulder aims to gently mobilise the shoulder joint, relax certain specific muscles and work on the spine, manipulating certain joints to affect changes in the joints mechanics, muscles control and nerves to lessen excessive tension, and aid lack of movement so everything is working better and more normally.
Organic anti-inflammatories can be prescribed such as Vitamin D, Turmeric and Ginger. These these organic anti-inflammatories just take a little longer to get in the system.
Daryl Herbert's instructional videos provide a visual and audible description of Osteopathic Minimal (short) Lever Mid Range Manipulation Techniques, for osteopaths, physiotherapists, manual therapists, mid to senior level students, graduates and post graduates. Techniques demonstrated look at the basic spinal regions, the spinal junctions, the sacro-iliac joints, ribs and the lower and upper extremity joints.
